Research Task

Match on action;
This shot is used during filming in order to show the continuity of a movement, as a subject will begin their action in one shot and the action will be continued to completion in the following shot. The fluid movement by the subject creates the impression of continuous time for the audience and acts as a distraction from the change in camera angle.

Shot/ reverse shot;
The first character is shot looking at another character, either on or off screen, and the second character is then shown looking back at the first. As the characters are filmed looking in opposite directions, the audience assumes that they are looking at one another, creating a sense of direction for the viewers.

180- degree rule;
The rule is used to ensure that the camera always remains on one side of the action. In order to maintain the audience's sense of direction in a scene, the camera must remain on one side of the horizontal axis while the action unfolds in the centre. If the camera crosses the axis the character's positions will appear reversed, defeating the sense of realism in the scene and disrupting the audience's sense of direction.
